Mahaguthi, Craft with a Conscience, is a nonprofit organization founded by a follower of Mahatma Gandhi in 1927. With an aim to help women become self-reliant, artisans receive vocational training in tailoring and weaving, along with shelter, food and support. Membership now numbers over one thousand artisans operating in fifteen different areas in Nepal. Mahaguthi encourages revival of cultural craft traditions while providing steady employment and fair wages, safe working conditions, member benefits, and environmental protection while promoting long term sustainability.
