Founded by a follower of Mahatma Gandhi, Mahaguthi began in 1927, working with marginalized populations, widows and low caste people. A school and ashram were founded to provide a safe haven for women, teaching them tailoring and weaving as a means to self-reliance. Since that time, it has expanded throughout Nepal to include crafts from over one thousand artisans. By providing fair wages and a steady income to members from sales of crafts, Mahaguthi helps to maintain cultural and artistic traditions.
